Why Your Drains Keep Clogging (and Why It’s Usually Not What You Think)

If your drain clogs once, it’s annoying.

If it keeps clogging over and over again, it’s something else.

This is a common issue we see in homes across Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville and the surrounding areas. And most of the time, the cause isn’t what people expect.

A lot of homeowners assume they’re just being unlucky or that something got stuck in the drain again. So they clear it, move on and hope it doesn’t happen again. But when clogs keep coming back, there’s usually a deeper issue.

In many cases, the problem isn’t right at the drain. It’s further down the line.

Over time, things like grease, soap and debris build up along the inside of your pipes. Even if water is still getting through, that buildup narrows the space and makes it easier for things to get stuck.

That’s why the clog seems to “come back.” It was never fully gone.

In other cases, especially in older homes in Hamilton and Burlington, the issue can be more serious. Tree roots, shifting pipes or small breaks in the line can all cause repeated blockages.

These problems don’t go away with a quick fix.

That’s why snaking a drain often only solves the issue temporarily. It clears a path through the blockage, but it doesn’t clean the pipe or fix what caused the problem in the first place.

It’s a bit like poking a hole through something instead of removing it.

This is where the difference between short-term and long-term solutions becomes important.

For minor buildup, a more thorough cleaning like high-pressure flushing can remove the material along the pipe walls and restore proper flow.

But if the issue is structural, like roots or a damaged pipe, cleaning alone won’t solve it.

That’s why recurring clogs are something you don’t want to ignore.

They’re usually an early warning sign that something is happening deeper in your sewer line.

The good news is that you don’t always have to treat it as an emergency.

If you catch it early, you have time to understand what’s going on and decide what makes the most sense. A sewer inspection can show whether the issue is buildup, roots, or damage.

From there, you can choose the right approach — whether that’s cleaning, maintenance or repair.
